Generally speaking, when setting up your business network for 8x8 service, you should NOT use port forwarding or triggering. Port forwarding or triggering requires a static internal IP address to be placed on each device. When specific ports are communicated from that device, the port triggering opens communication between the WAN/LAN in the firewall. Port triggering was used heavily before QoS was available. It is now used only in specific, uncommon situations.

Instead, please utilize the following option sets (depending on your network hardware):

  • QoS: Quality of Service
  • ToS: Type of Service
  • CoS: Class of Service

These settings see the port as being assigned as high-priority and subsequently adjust it for any device on the network, so static IPs are not required. To make things even easier, 8x8 offers a selection of routers with QoS pre-configured for 8x8 service.

What about individual home users?

When there is only one (1) phone on the network (such as an individual remote/home user), port forwarding can safely be used, and may actually help alleviate some call quality issues. To do so, in general, you'll want to:

  1. Set a static IP on your IP phone.
  2. Set port forwarding for that static IP on your router.
