PBX stands for “Private Branch Exchange.” PBX can save an extreme amount of money for businesses with many phones. Before PBX was introduced, companies would need separate phone lines for each phone they had within the building. This is extremely expensive and takes a lot of managing and setup. These phone lines would have to be set up by the telephone company itself. The PBX feature eliminates the use of these phone lines lowering the cost and the amount of time to set up the whole phone network.
The PBX feature allows you to put phones on your desks to make, receive, transfer and conference calls without investing in a physical PBX. It has many of the features of a standard PBX system from vendors such as Cisco, Avaya, Panasonic, Hitachi, etc., as well as advanced features such as Call Recording and unified messaging.
Each phone setup with PBX will automatically connect to the PBX server when the phones PBX credentials have been entered. Even when doing an internal transfer from one PBX phone to another, it will still connect to the PBX server before then establishing a connection with the phone on the end.
To build your PBX, you simply need to add an account for each phone. A phone can be any SIP compatible VOIP phone, either a hardware desk phone or a softphone which can be installed on your PC (for example X-Lite from www.counterpath.com).
