SMS Campaign Registration Deadline Extended

Overview

Recently the US Mobile Carriers announced that they were extending their March 31, 2023 deadline for SMS Campaign Registration.

Applies To

  • 8x8 SMS Campaign Registration
  • The Campaign Registry

Questions & Answers

What does this mean?

This new deadline extension means that until a new deadline date is established, US mobile phone service providers will not actively block business SMS messages if your campaign isn’t currently registered. This will very likely change in the near future.

Is there a new registration deadline?

At this time we do not have a new deadline date to provide.

However, you are strongly encouraged to register your SMS campaign as soon as possible so that:

  • You’ll be able to use 8x8 SMS.
  • You can avoid any future rush to go through the Campaign Registration process.

Do I still need to register a campaign?

Yes! All 8x8 customers who use 8x8 SMS (or intend to) must register an SMS Campaign in order to actually send SMS messages using 8x8 services.

Could my SMS messages still be blocked if I don’t register a campaign?

SMS Campaign Registration is a requirement mandated by US Mobile Carriers. Even though there is currently no confirmed proactive blocking of SMS, all service providers in the industry are moving towards this as a requirement moving forward.

At this time 8x8 is not taking any action to block SMS traffic, however we do require an active campaign in order to create/edit SMS services on any of your users.

What if my business does not run any SMS campaigns, do I still need to register?

All SMS that is sent over 8x8 Work or 8x8 Contact Center is marked as business SMS (A2P, or Application to Person), and therefore requires SMS Campaign Registration. All business SMS messaging must comply with new A2P requirements as outlined by the CTIA Messaging Principles and Best Practices.

This effectively means that if you send SMS messages from 8x8 for any reason, in any amount, you must first register an SMS Campaign.

Do I need to register an SMS campaign if I don’t use 8x8 SMS?

If you do not send any SMS messages to any mobile phone subscribers, SMS campaign registration is not required in your case.

Note: 8x8 Work has a built-in instant messaging (IM) feature designed to allow users of 8x8 Work on the same 8x8 service to chat directly with each other. Even though this IM feature uses the same Messages interface as SMS messages do in 8x8 Work, IM is not SMS, and can be used as needed without SMS campaign registration.
