Sameroom: Chat Service Limitations and Known Issues

Chat Service Limitations and Known Issues

We’ve worked hard to integrate chat services so everyone can benefit from interoperability, but this isn’t without its limitations.

See the Table of Contents at the left for a navigation list of specific chat services.

Application Support

In general, if you do not see a chat application listed on this page, then it is not supported by Sameroom.

Specific unsupported chat applications are marked below. However, you can also find the distilled list in the following article: Sameroom: Supported and Unsupported Chat Services.

Google Hangouts

  • No longer supported.
  • Unfortunately Google is no longer actively investing in the Hangouts chat API and can potentially terminate it at any time. Because of this and changes to their authentication methods, it's been decided that Hangouts is no longer supported.
  • You can find more information from Google about this, here: Updates to Hangouts Chat migration timelines

Open System ConsoleIntegrationsCustom Integrations and set Enable webhooks and slash commands to override usernames and Enable webhooks and slash commands to override profile picture icons to true.

Microsoft Teams

  • Currently not supported.
  • Currently there is no planned development timeframe for a Teams integration with Sameroom.

  • Owner of the Tube will not get notifications for new messages. For a possible solution, click here.

  • Chatter webpage must be refreshed to see new messages.

  • These restrictions refer to the standard, non-Business version of Skype.
  • Login to the Sameroom.io admin interface using Skype credentials is not supported. Microsoft changed the API a while back, and we could not fix this (the API is unpublished). You must use an alternate method to log in to your Sameroom account.
  • The Skype Bridgebot is required for message relay. Follow the instructions in the article linked below to add the Sameroom bridgebot to Skype.

  • Files sent from Sameroom to Skype will appear as temporary links. Temporary links are good for 24 hours.
  • Skype BridgeBot: "Send Contacts" message posted in Skype will be relayed as an empty message or not at all.
  • Skype BridgeBot: Skype video messages are not relayed by Sameroom.
  • No support for message edits and deletion.
  • Important: In rare cases, it has been recently observed (2021) that edits of messages already sent to Skype from other chat applications may cause the inbound Skype message queue to become blocked. This results in messages relayed by Sameroom not being displayed in the affected Skype group. In this case, Sameroom commands issued in that Skype group will also appear to not be received. However, Sameroom continues to relay all messages (but not edits or deletions, as stated above). After thorough investigation, we've determined that this is exclusively a Skype messaging issue.

Skype for Business / Lync

  • Office 365 is not supported because it does not have persistent chat rooms as a feature.
  • Only available with on-premise Sameroom Proxy.
  • Only available with Sameroom Enterprise.

Slack

  • Text messages sent together with images or other files in Slack are not relayed by Sameroom. In this scenario, only the sent image or file will be relayed, not the text.
  • Sameroom commands in Slack should be invoked via the @Sameroom mention instead of -sameroom.
  • If your admin disabled 3rd party integrations for non-admins, you can’t use your Slack account with Sameroom. Ask your admin to turn off the limitation, or use an admin account to create a Sameroom Tube for you.
  • Highlighted words coming across Sameroom will not cause desktop/mobile notifications. (But @mentions will.)
  • No support for message edits and deletion.
  • Files will be posted from account who have created Tube, and name of sender will be in file name description.
  • Slack posts will not be relayed by Sameroom.
