How to Change the Preferred Codec for Extensions in 8x8 Admin Console

Objective 

Set a preferred codec for each user. This is done by account administrators.

  • 8x8 Admin Console

  • Physical Handsets
Note-Icon.png The codec selection only applies to physical phones and not 8x8 Work for Desktop or 8x8 Work for Mobile. If the Device Model Is set to none it is not possible to change the codec for the device.

Procedure

  1. Log in to 8x8 Admin Console.
  2. Click Users.
  3. Click Edit (pencil icon) to the right of the desired User Profile to edit.
  4. Go to the Voice Basic Settings.
  5. Under Preferred Codec, select your choice from the drop-down.

  6. Click Save.

G.729 (compressed toll quality)

- Bandwidth: 30 kbps upload and 30 kbps download.
- Designed to conserve network bandwidth with slight decrease in voice quality.
- Compatible with all 8x8 devices except Work for Mobile, KIRK Cordless phone and 8x8 Softphone.

G.711 (toll quality)

- Bandwidth: 90 Kbps upload and 90 Kbps download
- Designed for toll quality without any voice compression.
- Compatible with all 8x8 devices, Work for Mobile, and Softphone.

G.722 (HD voice quality)

- Bandwidth: 90 Kbps upload and 90 Kbps download
- Designed for high fidelity voice and best sound quality.
- Compatible with all 8x8 devices except Work for Mobile, KIRK Cordless, 8x8 Softphone, Cisco SPA122 ATA, Softalk Office, and PSTN (traditional telephone service).

  • Changing codec from G.729 to G.711 or G.722(HD Voice) will require additional network and Internet bandwidth. Check with your network administrator before changing the codec.
  • Saving changes to your codec may cause the telephone to restart after the current call is completed. Reset will not interrupt a call in progress.
