8x8 Microsoft (Outlook and Skype for Business) Integration: Outlook 2010 Starts in Safe Mode

Symptom

When the 8x8 Virtual Office Integration for Microsoft (Outlook and Skype for Business) is installed, the Outlook program launches in Safe Mode.

Applies To

Microsoft Outlook 2010 users who have downloaded and installed a bad security patch released by Microsoft in December 2015.

Resolution

Windows 10

  1. Go to Start.
  2. In the Search Windows box, enter View Installed Updates, then press Enter.
  3. In the list of updates, locate and then select update KB3114409.
  4. Select Uninstall.

Windows 8, 8.1

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen (or point your mouse cursor to the lower-right corner of the screen).
  2. Select Search, then enter windows update.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Installed Updates.
  5. In the list of updates, locate and then select update KB3114409.
  6. Select Uninstall.

Windows 7, Vista, XP

  1. Go to Start
  2. Enter Run, and then select Run.
  3. Enter Appwiz.cpl, and then select OK.
  4. Use one of the following procedures, depending on the operating system that you're running.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista

  1. Select View installed updates.
  2. In the list of updates, locate and select update KB3114409
  3. Select Uninstall.

Windows XP

  1. Select the Show updates check box.
  2. In the list of updates, locate and select update KB3114409.
  3. Select Remove.

Cause

This appears to be caused by a bad security patch released by Microsoft in December 2015, KB3114409. Per Microsoft's own KB3114409 Knowledge Base article:

After you install this update, Outlook 2010 may start only in safe mode. If this issue occurs, uninstall the update. This update is no longer available now.

Microsoft has pulled the patch so that it is no longer distributed. However, users who have already downloaded and installed it will need to remove it themselves. (The below instructions are available on the KB3114409 Knowledge Base article.)
