Polycom Device Update Reboot FAQ (Summer 2018)

In August 2018, some 8x8 customers were notified that Polycom desk phones on certain extensions in their 8x8 systems require reboot or manual re-provisioning in order to ensure future updates and operability. This action is required by August 8, 2018.

Why do I have to manually reboot my phones?

In preparation for a firmware update, 8x8 phones must have a configuration that allows the existing firmware on the phone to be updated. These phones have an older configuration that does not allow them to be updated to the latest firmware version. The next time the phone is rebooted, it will automatically update to the new configuration that will allow the firmware to be updated.

How do I reboot my phones?

To reboot your phones, simply unplug them from the network and power source, wait two minutes, and reconnect them.

Why do I need to upgrade my firmware when my phones work just fine?

In order to maintain the integrity of the phone system at the level of 8x8's standards, we need to upgrade the security certificate installed on the phones. This will be done through a firmware upgrade. In addition to the new security settings, you will also benefit from new bug fixes and compatibility with new 8x8 products and services.

What happens if I do not reboot my phones?

The phones will remain operable, but will not receive any configuration updates until the firmware is updated. Firmware updates on phones requiring them after August 8, 2018, may require you to complete the steps to manually update firmware and manually provision your phones below.

What do I do next?

Certain identified users will need to manually update the firmware on their phones, and then re-provision them. (Also required for users who missed the August 8, 2018, cut-off to perform a simple reboot.) Instructions for these tasks are below.
